The Michigan Asian Pacific American Affairs Commission (MAPAAC) proudly recognizes and celebrates Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s proclamation officially declaring May as Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month in the state of Michigan.
This annual recognition underscores the essential contributions of AAPI communities to Michigan’s cultural, social and economic landscape. It is a powerful acknowledgment of the rich histories, diverse identities and vibrant cultures that have shaped — and continue to strengthen — our state and our nation.
"As we celebrate AAPI Heritage Month, I welcome everyone to join the many events happening across our communities,” said Rebeka Islam, Executive Director of APIA Vote Michigan and MAPAAC Commissioner. “This month is a time to share our cultures and uplift the voices that make our communities so vibrant. I look forward to celebrating with all of you.”
As Commissioners of MAPAAC, we carry the diverse stories, resilience and cultural richness of our communities,” said Commissioner Sumaiya Sheikh. “AAPI Heritage Month is a powerful reminder that our identities are not a limitation, but a vibrant blend that strengthens the foundation of a more inclusive Michigan.”
Gov. Whitmer echoed this sentiment in her proclamation, stating: “During this month, we should recommit ourselves to promoting equity and acceptance for the AAPI community, stand up against discrimination and hatred, and ensure that our state is a welcoming and inclusive place for all.”
As we observe AAPI Heritage Month, MAPAAC encourages all Michiganders to reflect on the invaluable contributions of AAPI individuals throughout our history. This month invites us to celebrate heritage, honor legacies and build bridges across communities. We invite residents across the state to participate in events and initiatives that celebrate the richness and diversity of AAPI cultures and experiences.
Together, let us continue working toward a Michigan that embraces all communities with dignity, respect and unity.
